Heavy Rain for PS3: Pre E3 2009 Info. Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

In terms of its capabilities, the PlayStation 3 is probably the beefiest console on the market. Unfortunately very few games even start to take full advantage of the PS3's hardware. That's something Quantic Dream intends to change with their brand new Action/Mystery game, Heavy Rain: The Origami Killer.

In Heavy Rain, players will control one of four intertwined characters as they work to unravel the mystery of the origami killer. Each character will be a unique playing experience in and of themselves, which should give the game an enormous amount of replay potential. Director (and Quantic founder) David Cage has stated that Heavy Rain is supposed to be "...a very dark film noir thriller with mature themes."

PS3 'Slim' Redesign Leaked?

PS3 'Slim' Redesign Leaked? Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Yesterday, we heard our first rumors about a new, trimmed-down PlayStation 3, which is supposed to be revealed during E3. Now we have what might be our first piece of legitimate photographic proof of the rumor. The above image was leaked to Engadget today, and it shows what appears to be what we're going to call the PlayStation Slim.

The possible Slim was captured by a ridiculously low-quality picture, probably from a very budget cell phone. From what I can tell, the photo is definitely not of a current PlayStation 3. The edges of the PS3 have been rounded and slanted down, and this new console is drastically thinner than the PlayStation's on the market right now.

Slim Sony PS3 Rumor for E3 2009? Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

The E3 news parade continues. We've just come across rumors from PlayStation Lifestyle that Sony is getting ready to reveal a new hardware redesign at E3. Details are lacking right now, but a lot of the current buzz suggests that this 'redesign' could be a slimmed down version of the PS3. According to PlayStation Lifestyle,

"When we caught wind of this, the exact word “redesign” was used, which leaves me to believe that it is indeed a PS3 slim.  Announcing a different color wouldn’t exactly warrant the term “redesign”."

Topic: PS3

Schmartz PS3IR-1000 lets You use IR Remotes on the Sony PS3 Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review The Schmartz PS3IR-1000 is an infrared (IR) to Bluetooth converter for the Sony PS3. The device offers the same functionality as the Sony PS3 Blu-ray remote control, but it accepts IR commands.
Such an IR to Bluetooth converter is great if you want to use the PS3 via your universal remote control (e.g.: Logitech Harmony 1100). In principal Bluetooth is great for wireless controllers, but it just does not fit well in the home theater ecosystem where all devices are controlled via IR. Read more

Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 Feel Recession Pinch in March

Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 Feel Recession Pinch in March Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Revenues from US video games sales dropped more than expected in March, down 17% from a year ago, according to the NPD Group; the first real sign of the current economic climate affecting the resilient video game industry.

Overall sales totaled $1.43 billion compared to $1.72 billion a year ago. For the entire first quarter, revenues remained flat at $4.25 billion.

While analysts were surprised by the drop, NPD’s Anita Frazier was quick to point out multiple circumstances contributed.

"While it might be tempting to jump to the conclusion that the sky is starting to fall on the video games industry given this month's results, it's important to remember that two very big things are different this year than last. First, Easter fell in March last year whereas it fell in April this year, and last March included the release of Super Small Bros.: Brawl, which went on to become the fourth best-selling game in 2008."

PS3, Wii May Soon Stream Netflix Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Job postings can be so revealing (see I4U’s Microsoft/Halo report). And now through a Netflix job listing, it appears the popular movie rental/streaming company may soon expand to a Wii and/or PS3 near you.

While the job listing does not mention the consoles by name, Netflix is looking for an “engineering leader for the gaming platforms team,” with “experience with digital media on embedded platforms; ideally on one or more gaming consoles.” In fact, the word “consoles” is used quite a bit in the posting, and currently Netflix is only available on one console, the Xbox 360.

Last month, CrunchGear reported on a Netflix survey looking to gauge public interest for Netflix on the PS3, suggesting a definite interest by at least one party.

Sony PS3 Console to be discontinued

Topic: PS3

Sony PS3 Console to be discontinued Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Right on the heels of the announcement to cut the price of the Sony PS2 to $99.99, Sony is about to announce the end of the Sony PS3. The reasons for cancelling the PS3 are the current economic crisis that just is not a market for a luxury gaming console. Additionally Sony's ego cannot take more beating by Microsoft’s Xbox 360. This is a drastic move, but there is no alternative solution.

Sony is going to focus all attention now on the Sony PS2, which at the new price point has the potential to even topple the Nintendo Wii as best selling game console. Read more
